farewell my concubine movie poster 1.jpg

This film tells the story of two actors, from their first encounter at school in the Twenties through their success as stars of the Peking Opera, difficulties during the Japanese occupation, the Communist takeover in 1949 and the traumas of the Cultural Revolution in the Sixties. It is also a love story of a rare kind… Dieyi is a homosexual and suffers rejection when his friend and fellow actor, Xiaolou, begins an affair with Juxian (Gong Li), a beautiful prostitute. The personal conflict of each character is the heart of this exceptional and sad movie.

Director: Chen Kaige

Stars: Cheung Leslie, Li Gong, Zhang Fengyi

JDramaMama's Rating: A+

This is one of the most visually beautiful films I have ever seen. The costumes are gorgeous, the Chinese opera lovely and to top it all off, Gong Li and Leslie Cheung are stunning in it! The beautiful and talented Gong Li, who is in my opinion, the best actress in Asia, and the handsome and talented Leslie Cheung, outdid themselves . I simply adore this film, sad ending and all.
